Putnam Calls for House to Vote on "Obama Care' Repeal Legislation

Date: July 29, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Adam Putnam (R-Fla.) today announced he has joined the call to repeal "Obama Care," the national health insurance reform legislation signed into law earlier this year. Putnam signed a discharge petition that would force a vote on repeal legislation (HR 4972) in the House of Representatives. More than 160 members have signed the petition. However, 218 signatures -- a majority of the House -- are necessary to bring the legislation to the Floor.

"A majority of Americans were not in favor of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act when it was first passed after months of political maneuvering," said Putnam. "Since then, we've learned more about the many problems woven into the fabric of this legislation.

"For example, seniors can expect fewer choices, reduced access to care, smaller benefits and higher taxes. Deficits will increase faster under the new law, small businesses will face additional burdens, and as many as 35 million workers will be pushed onto public exchanges.

"With an economic recovery in danger of stalling, Congress should reconsider the effects and unintended consequences of this enormously disruptive legislation."

Since 2001, Putnam has represented Florida's 12th Congressional District, which includes most of Polk County and portions of Hillsborough and Osceola counties.
